Yothu Yindi
Aboriginal group fronted by spokesman and local headmaster Mandaway Yunipingu, based in the remote, crocodile-infested region of Arnhem Land in the Northern Territories. Their name translating as ‘mother and child’, they became a force in both Australia and the rest of the world via their serene, indigenous sounds, with singing in their native Gumadj language. 1992's Treaty, which decried Australian Prime Minister Bob Hawke's broken promise to draw up a treaty on Aboriginal rights, also crossed over to the UK dance charts. ‘Our sole purpose as a band is that we're trying to develop and create an impact for our culture. And music has a universal language that can convey that.’ Licensed from the Australian Mushroom label to Hollywood, it appeared in a remix from Melbourne DJ's Gavin Campbell and Paul Main and programmer/musician Robert Goodge. Resplendent in digeridoo, clap sticks and tribal chants, it quickly became a hot DJ item.
