Yello
A Swiss dance duo led by Dieter Meier, a millionaire business man, professional gambler, and member of the Switzerland national golf team. Meier provides the concepts whilst his partner Boris Blank writes the music. Previously Meier had released two solo singles and been a member of Periphery Perfume band Fresh Colour. Their first recording contract was with Ralph Records in San Francisco, a label supported by the enigmatic Residents. They opened their accounts there with Bimbo and the album SOLID PLEASURE. In the UK they signed to the Do It label, launching their career with Bostisch, previously their second single for Ralph. They quickly proved popular with the Futurist and New Romantic crowds. Chart success in the UK began after a move to Stiff in 1983 where they released two singles and an LP. A brief sojourn with Elektra preceded a move to Mercury where they saw major success with The Race. Accompanied by a stunning video — Meier saw visual entertainment as crucial to their work — The Race easily transgressed the pop and dance markets in the wake of the Acid House phenomenon. On the LP ONE SECOND, they worked closely with Shirley Bassey and Billy McKenzie, and have recently become more and more embroiled in cinema. Recent soundtracks include Nuns On The Run, and the Polish filmed Snowball, a fairytale whose creative impetus is entirely down to Yello. Meier and Blank also run Solid Pleasure, the innovative Swiss dance label.
