Kathy Young
b. 21 October 1945, Santa Ana, California, USA. After hearing her distinctive child-like voice, top entertainer Wink Martindale suggested 14-year-old Kathy should try to get a deal with Los Angeles-based Indigo Records. Her first recording was a revival of Gene Pearson And The Revileers doo-wop hit A Thousand Stars, and it climbed to number 3 in the US in 1960, and made the R&B Top 10. She was backed on the record by the California-based smooth harmony trio the Innocents and together they chalked up a further two US hits Happy Birthday Blues and Magic Is The Night, before Kathy turned sweet 16. After a few unsuccessful singles she joined her manager Jim Lee's Monogram label in 1962, but her records both as a soloist and with Chris Montez failed to rekindle the public's interest. She later recorded on Starfire and married John Maus of the Walker Brothers.
