Joe Young
b. 4 July 1889, New York, USA, d. 21 April 1939, New York, USA. Young was a popular lyricist from 1911 through to the late '30s. From 1916-30 he collaborated on lyrics with Sam M. Lewis, for different composers. Early in his career, Young worked as a singer, plugger of songs for music publishers, and then entertained the troops in World War I. His early songs included Don't Blame It All On Broadway, When The Angelus Was Ringing and Yaaka Hula Hickey Dula, written with Pete Wendling and Ray Goetz, for Al Jolsonto sing in ROBINSON CRUSOE JNR (1916). For the same show, Young collaborated with Sam Lewis, and composer George Meyer, on Where Did Robinson Crusoe Go With Friday On Saturday Night?. The Young-Lewis lyric partnership continued for 14 years, on songs such as ‘If I Knock The L Out Of Kelly’ ( STEP THIS WAY), Arrah Go On, I'm Gonna Go Back To Oregon, Rock-A-Bye-Your-Baby With A Dixie Melody (with Jean Schwartz) and My Mammy (with Walter Donaldson for SINBAD), Just A Baby's Prayer At Twilight, ‘How Ya Gonna Keep Em Down On The Farm? In 1930 Young and Lewis combined with Harry Warren on one of their last projects together, the early talkie, SPRING IS HERE, which included Cryin For The Carolines’, Have A Little Faith In Me, Bad Baby and How Shall I Tell?. The final Young-Lewis song appears to be Absence Makes The Heart Grow Fonder. In 1931 Young collaborated with lyricist Mort Dixon and Warren on You're My Everything, Ooh! That Kiss, Love Me Forever, and The Torch Song for Ed Wynn's Broadway show, THE LAUGH PARADE. From then on, during the '30s, he mostly wrote his own lyrics on songs such as Can t Get Mississippi Off My Mind’, I'm Alone Because I Love You, In A Shanty In Old Shanty Town (with John Siras, from the movie THE CROONER), The Lady I Love, Lullaby Of The Leaves (with Bernice Petkere), Snuggled On Your Shoulder (with Carmen Lombardo), Was That The Human Thing To Do?, Something In The Night, Annie Doesn't Live Here Anymore, I'm Growing Fonder Of You, I'm Gonna Sit Right Down And Write Myself A Letter (with Fred Ahlert); You're A Heavenly Thing, Sing An Old Fashioned Song and Dancing With You.
