Shelly West
b. 23 May 1958, Cleveland, Ohio, but raised in Nashville, Tennessee, USA. The daughter of country singer Dottie West, it seemed natural that she should follow her mother into showbusiness. After completing her high school education in 1975, she sang backing harmonies for her mother. In 1977, she married Allen Frizzell (Lefty and David Frizzell's youngest brother), who was her mother's bandleader. They moved to California, where they joined David Frizzell and played the club circuits over several states. She began to sing with David and in 1981 charted a US country number 1 with You're The Reason God Made Oklahoma, which featured in the Clint Eastwood film Any Which Way You Can. Further country Top 10 hits followed, including A Texas State Of Mind and I Just Came Here To Dance. In 1982, their duet Please Surrender, was used by Eastwood in his film Honky Tonk Man. In 1983, she had a solo US country number 1 with Jose Cuervo and further solo hits with Flight 309 To Tennessee and Another Motel Memory. A further Top 20 duet hit, It's A Be Together Night with David Frizzell, followed in 1984. She was divorced in 1985 and currently her career seems to have slowed down, with no chart hits since 1986.
