Sister Souljah
b. Lisa Williamson, USA. Rapper who became something of a cause celebre when President-elect Bill Clinton verbally attacked her during his campaign. On June 13 1992 he declared that Souljah had made ‘racist remarks’ and ‘advocated violence against whites’ in an interview with Rolling Stone magazine. As if having such political heavyweights on her case were not enough, she also found herself being sued by former producer Michael Shinn, after she listed him as a ‘two-faced backstabber’ on the sleevenotes to her 1992 Epic album. The source of their inital disagreement was not disclosed, but she was dropped from the label after its release in any case. The album is still worth investigating however, notably on cuts like State Of Accomodation: Why Aren't You Angry? and Killing Me Softly: Deadly Code Of Silence, which featured guest shots from Chuck D and Ice Cube respectively. She also worked with Public Enemy, joining the band in late 1990 after accompanying them on their US lecture tour. However, her contribution (rapping on By The Time I Get To Arizona from THE ENEMY STRIKES BLACK) was disappointing and her tenure with the band was a brief one. She had already appeared on Terminator X's single, Wanna Be Dancin (Buck Whylin')', and would also guest on his debut solo album.
