Marvin Stamm
b. 23 May 1939, Memphis, Tennessee, USA. After studying trumpet at school and later at North Texas State University, Stamm joined the Stan Kenton Mellophonium Orchestra. In the mid-60s he was with Woody Herman, then became a studio player based in New York. During the next few years he also played many jazz dates, including work with the Thad Jones- Mel Lewis Jazz Orchestra, Frank Foster, Chick Corea and with Duke Pearson's rehearsal band. In the '70s and on into the '80s he continued mixing studio work with jazz, playing with Benny Goodman, leading his own small groups and working with the American Jazz Orchestra and with George Gruntz. Stamm's decision to spend a substantial part of his career to date working in the studios has limited the number of opportunities for the jazz audience to hear him. When those occasions have arisen he has proved to be an interesting and enthusiastic player whose best work is always precise and controlled.
