Axel Stordahl
b. 8 August 1913, New York City, New York, USA, d. 30 August 1963, Encino, California, USA. Early in his career Stordahl played trumpet with the Bert Block band, but joined Tommy Dorsey in 1936, and was allowed to develop his arranging talents. Although he could write effective big band swingers, Stordahl was most effective with sensitive interpretations of ballad, which suited the singing style of another Dorsey employee, Frank Sinatra. After his stint with Dorsey, Stordahl arranged for and led studio bands on radio and television. He was also in demand by record companies, where he again encountered Sinatra, In collaboration with Paul Weston, Stordahl wrote the music for Day By Day (lyrics by Sammy Cahn).
