Antonio "Tony" Sbarbaro
b. 27 June 1897, New Orleans, Louisiana, USA, d. 30 October 1969. After playing drums in several local bands in his home town, Sbarbaro moved to Chicago where, in 1916, he became a member of the Original Dixieland Jazz Band. In 1925 he took over leadership of the band and was involved in various ODJB recreations and reformations for much of the next three decades, often playing kazoo as well as drums. Although he did not have the polished jazz technique of his black counterparts from New Orleans, or indeed of some of the better white dixieland drummers, Sbarbaro (who frequently used the name Tony Spargo) was a lively drummer who brought great enthusiasm to his performances.
