Rhinoceros
A rock band that promised more than it was able to deliver, Rhinoceros was an Elektra Records' signing of the late '60s. The group looked a formidable line-up on paper with Michael Fonfara, ex- Electric Flag (keyboards), Billy Mundi, ex- Mothers Of Invention (drums), Doug Hastings, ex- Buffalo Springfield (guitar), Danny Weis, ex- Iron Butterfly (guitar) and John Finlay (vocals). The spectacular fold out cover artwork on their debut by G. Sazaferin showed a brightly colourful, beaded Rhinoceros. Unfortunately the music was disappointing, only the Buddy Miles influenced You're My Girl (I Don't Want To Discuss It) and their ‘greatest hit’ the instrumental Apricot Brandy stood out. The BBC adopted the latter as a Radio 1 theme. Two more albums followed, but by now the ponderous Rhinoceros had turned into a dodo.
