Revolting Cocks
Endearingly titled industrial funk metal band, the name occasionally shortened to RevCo when propriety demands. The Revolting Cocks history stretches back to the mid-80s when Al Jourgenson (also Ministry) met Belgians Richard 23 and Luc Van Acker in a Chicago pool hall. Legend has it that a drunken Van Acker stumbled in to Jourgenson when the latter was attempting to make a winning shot in a $500 game. However, Jourgenson recovered his composure to win, and the three celebrated by wrecking the club. On their exit the manager was heard to remark ‘Get out, you revolting cocks!’. The group's first single under their new moniker would be No Devotion, housed on Chicago's infamous Wax Trax label. When it made the PMRC's ‘Naughty 9’ list for its blasphemy something of a noble tradition was born. The lyrical scope of the group's debut offered no respite. Subject matter included rioting soccer fans, sitcom junkies and industrial accidents. Joined in 1987 by multi-instrumentalist William Rieflin, the next single, You Often Forget, featured both ‘malignant’ and ‘benign’ versions in tribute to the prevalent media fascination with Betty Ford's breasts. Richard 23 then departed for Front 242, to be replaced by Chris Connelly of Finitribe fame. Paul Barker of Ministry was also on hand to guest and co-produce the half-live YOU GODDAMNED SON OF A BITCH, recorded at a Chicago show in September 1987. However, BEERS, STEERS AND QUEERS would be the group's second album proper, its title-track a hilarious machismo pile-up of cowboy kitsch and dialogue stolen from the homo-erotic scenes of Deliverance. A ‘cover’ of Olivia Newton John's (Let's Get) Physical was also on hand to startle the casual browser — basically consisting of a loop of someone screaming the title. Afterwards the band would move away from Wax Trax (as had Ministry, from whom RevCo would now additionally absorb Roland Barker, Mike Scaccia and Louie Svitek). The madness continued unabated at their new label, with LINGER FICKEN' GOOD this time seizing Rod Stewart's Do You Think I'm Sexy and righteously deflowering it with additional lyrics from Connelly concerning dentistry. Afterwards RevCo took a break from inflaming moral umbrage while Jourgenson concentrated on Ministry activities.
