Red Dragon
b. Leroy May, Kingston, Jamaica, West Indies. One of the most enduring and dependable DJs to emerge from Jamaica, Dragon—or rather Redman as he was then known—learnt his trade on Barrington Hi-Fi in 1981, progressing to Stone Love, Small Axe, Rambo Mango (which he owned) and People's Choice sound systems, before changing his name in 1984 after the popularity of his Laughing Dragon lyric on a dub plate. Fellow DJ Charlie Chaplin had also passed through the ranks of People's Choice and produced his debut tune, Computer, in 1985. 
The following year Dragon went to Harry J who released Nah Get Nutten and Commander to a welcoming dancehall audience. In 1987 Hol A Fresh was a massive hit for Winston Riley, but failed to crossover as predicted owing to poor promotion. Nevertheless its local success ensured a wealth of releases for the late King Tubby (Canter Mi Horse), Redman, Vena and King Jammys, where Duck Dance and Della Skank confirmed his ability to define the latest dancehall moves. In 1989 Riley's Techniques label issued an album pairing him with his DJ brother, Flourgon. That same year witnessed the birth of his own Dragon imprint, on which he released tunes by young artists such as John Mouse as well as himself: Old, Love Unuh and My Anthem achieving the most recognition. Throughout 1990-91 he recorded very little; concentrating instead on encouraging fresh talent coming up through Rambo Mango and Flourgon's Sweet Love set. Buju Banton and Terry Ganzie both started their careers with Dragon. In 1992 he made a return to the dancehall market with the uncharacteristic PUM PUM SHORTS, and then several sides for Shang, Steely And Clevie, Mafia & Fluxy and Parrish. The momentum increased during 1993 and there were a proliferation of hits for the likes of Bobby Digital, Danny Browne, Winston Riley, Fashion and Sly And Robbie's Taxi label, all capturing his deep, rolling vocals and adept rhythm-riding to perfection.
