Raven
Formed in 1980, Raven were one of the first bands to be associated with the New Wave Of British Heavy Metal movement. Hailing from Newcastle, the group comprised the Gallagher brothers; John (vocals/bass) and Mark (guitar), plus drummer Rob ‘Wacko’ Hunter. Unleashing a three-component wall of noise punctuated by searing guitar work and shattering vocals, they signed to local independent label, Neat Records. Their reputation grew with the release of a single, Don't Need Your Money, and the ensuing live shows which promoted it. John Gallagher's trademark high-pitched vocals and the group's before-its-time speed metal were heard to best effect on four albums for Neat Records, including the excellent LIVE AT THE INFERNO. They then relocated to America and secured a deal with Atlantic Records. Adopting a more melodic approach, STAY HARD emerged in 1985 and sold well, but only in their adopted territory—the home-grown fan base was left somewhat aghast. Since then the band has reverted back to its former blitzkrieg style, releasing a string of competent, but rather dated and pedestrian albums. Drummer Rob Hunter moved into production work in 1988, to be replaced by Joe Hasselvander.
