New Fast Automatic Daffodils
Manchester, UK based indie band whose arrival in 1989 coincided with their city's descent in to ‘rave’ culture and an upswing in the fortunes of ‘baggy’ bands Stone Roses and Happy Mondays. From their debut at the Manchester Polytechnic Poetry Society in 1988, they were described in one quarter as resembling ‘a team of sex psychologists at a mass orgy’. The band, Andy Spearpoint (vocals), Justin Crawford (bass), Dolan Hewison (guitar), Perry Saunders (drums) and Icarus Wilson-Wright (percussion) signed to Belgian label Play It Again Sam in 1989. Among their early singles, the caustic but wry Music Is Shit gained most prominence. Get Better was remixed by Joy Division producer, Martin Hannett, before second album BODY EXIT MIND was recorded with Craig Leon ( Blondie, Ramones, Fall) at the helm. Their literate exposition of post-punk pop has won them many friends in the media, though record sales have failed to transpose to chart placings outside the ‘independent’ sector.
