Don Nix
b. 27 September 1941, Memphis, Tennessee, USA. Saxophonist Nix was one of several aspiring high-school musicians forming the basis of the Mar-Keys. This renowned instrumental group enjoyed several R&B-styled best-sellers and became the houseband for the Stax record company during the mid-60s, performing on sessions for Otis Redding, Rufus Thomas, Wilson Pickett and Sam And Dave. Nix moved to California in 1965 where he became acquainted with several ‘southern’ expatriates, notably Leon Russell and Delaney And Bonnie. Nix produced the latter's HOME, then subsequently worked with Albert King and John Mayall, and completed several uneven, yet endearing albums. In 1972 he toured with the ambitious Alabama State Troupers, an ad hoc musical carnival which also included Lonnie Mack, Jeannie Greene, Marlin Greene and Furry Lewis. Although never a well-known figure, Nix retained the respect of his contemporaries.
