Colin Newman
A founder member of Wire, guitarist/vocalist Newman began a solo career upon the group's demise in 1980. The promising A-Z continued the tenor of the artist's work on the preceding Wire album, 154, and featured erstwhile colleagues Robert Gotobed (drums) and Mike Thorne (production). Two sets appeared the following year with the purely instrumental set PROVISIONALLY ENTITLED THE SINGING FISH offering an alternative insight to Newman's talents. NOT TO, issued a mere six months later, echoed the style of the artist's debut, but marked a temporary pause in his recording career. Newman initially withdrew from music; however, having obtained a grant, he journeyed to India to complete a series of recordings. His return in 1984 sparked the seeds for that year's Wire reunion; since then commitments to the group have been punctuated by further solo outings.
