The Memphis Horns
The Memphis Horns, an off-shoot of the Mar-Keys, boasted a fluid line-up throughout its history. The mainstays, trumpeter Wayne Jackson and tenor saxophonist Andrew Love, guided the group through its period at the Staxand Hi studios. Augmented by James Mitchell (baritone saxophone), Jack Hale (trombone) and either Ed Logan or Lewis Collins (tenor saxophone), the Horns appeared on releases by Al Green, Ann Peebles, Syl Johnson and many others. The group's eponymous debut album featured several members of the Dixie Flyers and, during the mid-70s, the Horns secured four R&B hits including Get Up And Dance and Just For Your Love. The 1978 album MEMPHIS HORNS II, featured as guest vocalists, Michael McDonald, Anita Pointer and James Gilstrap. The Memphis Horns are, however, better recalled for their contributions to many of southern soul's finest moments. Andrew Love and Wayne Jackson maintained the Memphis Horns’ name throughout the '80s and made appearances on U2's RATTLE AND HUM and Keith Richards’ TALK IS CHEAP (both in 1988). In 1990, the duo joined the Robert Cray band.
