Sam Morgan
b. c.1895, Bertrandville, Louisiana, USA, d. 25 February 1936. Immensely popular in and around New Orleans, trumpeter Morgan's career was dogged by ill-health. Nevertheless, he achieved lasting fame thanks to some classic recordings made in 1927 which showed his to be a band of great style and attack, playing in the New Orleans manner. The band survived changing fashions but, following Morgan's second stroke, broke up in 1933. Morgan had two musical brothers: Isiah, who also played trumpet, and Al, who played bass with numerous bands including those of Cab Calloway, Fats Waller and Les Hite and also worked with Louis Armstrong, Louis Jordan and Sabby Lewis.
