Metalheads
Purveyors of hardcore techno whose ANGEL EP invoked the rather over-employed ‘intelligent hardcore’ term. Whether or not it was correct for sections of the cognoscenti to herald it as a great leap forward for the genre remains to be seen. The main man behind the record was Goldie, an ex-Grafitti artist of some note, who has spent time in New York, Miami and Birmingham. Possibly his most famous illustration was his Change The World mural at Queens Park Rangers ground, Loftus Road. Before Metalheads he had recorded a solo white label EP under the name Ajaz Project, then Killer Muffin on Reinforced, with whom he is now employed. His compatriots in the project are experienced DJs Fabio and Grooverider, both of whom have strong cult followings on their own terms. Further releases for Reinforced included the TERMINATOR and ENFORCERS EPs, before in November 1994 he unveiled the much-heralded Inner City Life. 22 minutes long in its full form, its urban narrative sought expression through three thematic ‘movements’. It prefaced him signing an album deal with London/ffrr, for which he initially worked with Simple Minds' drummer Mel Gaynor.
