Lou McGarity
b. 22 July 1917, Athens, Georgia, USA, d. 28 August 1971. After playing in dancebands in and around Atlanta, Georgia, trombonist McGarity moved north. In 1938, he joined Ben Bernie's popular recording unit and, two years later, became a member of the Benny Goodman band. After military service in World War II, McGarity again played with Goodman, then divided his time between west coast studio work and playing in small jazz groups, often those under the nominal leadership of Eddie Condon, Yank Lawson and Bob Haggart. In the '60s, he played with Bob CrosbyAnd The Bobcats and was with Lawson and Haggart in the World's Greatest Jazz Band. His warm sound and sometimes aggressive style made McGarity a welcome member of any Dixieland-orientated jazz band. He worked until the day of his death in August 1971.
