Augie Meyers
b. 1941, San Antonio, Texas, USA. Meyers is best known as the organist in the Sir Douglas Quintet on their '60s hits, including She's About A Mover and Mendocino. He has recorded on his own, and more importantly, perhaps, has influenced the keyboard players in groups such as Elvis Costello's Attractions and Joe King Carrasco's Crowns. Meyers, who also plays accordion, first appeared on record in 1958, with a group called Danny Ezba And The Goldens. In 1964, producer Huey P. Meaux was assembling a Texan rock group to combat the British Invasion and teamed Meyers with San Antonio singer/songwriter/guitarist Doug Sahm. The Sir Douglas Quintet disbanded in 1967, when Sahm moved to San Francisco and Meyers formed Lord August and the Visions Of Lite. He then joined Sahm in San Francisco and the Quintet was reborn, only to break up again in 1971. Meyers began releasing a string of solo albums that year, and has released eight to date. In 1990, he teamed up with Sahm and fellow Texans Flaco Jimenez and Freddy Fender for an album called TEXAS TORNADOS.
