Longbranch Pennywhistle
This Los Angeles-based duo is better recalled for the member's subsequent escapades. Glenn Frey(b. 6 November 1948, Detroit, Michigan, USA; guitar/vocals) arrived in California in 1968 where he met J.D Souther (b. John David Souther, c.1946, Texas, USA; guitar/vocals), an aspiring singer-songwriter. The pair then began performing together as Longbranch Pennywhistle. They secured a record deal with the Amos label, but although pleasant, the resultant album lacked identity and distinctiveness. A contract dispute then ensued, preventing the duo from further recording and they broke up in 1971. Frey subsequently joined Linda Ronstadt's backing group, from which the Eagles evolved, while Souther forged a successful solo career as both singer/songwriter and with the Souther-Hillman-Furay Band.
