Lisa Lisa & Cult Jam
Formed in Brooklyn, New York, USA, consisting of Lisa Velez (b. 1967, New York City, USA), the youngest of 10 children in her family, plus Mike Hughes (b. 1963) and Alex Spanador Mosely (b. 1962). The two men in the group were members of the New York funk/soul group Full Force. Lisa Lisa And Cult Jam were signed to Columbia Records in 1985 and recorded their debut single, I Wonder If I Take You Home, only a week after forming. The single, which rose to the Top 10 of the black charts in the USA and the national UK Top 20, was produced, written and recorded with the complete Full Force aggregation—only in concert did Lisa Lisa work strictly in the reduced trio format. Lisa Lisa And Cult Jam continued to achieve US Top 10 singles in the national and dance charts throughout the late '80s, including two US number 1 hits in 1987, Head To Toe and Lost In Emotion as well as, All Cried Out, Someone To Love Me For Me and Everything Will B-Fine. Their 1985, self-titled debut album was only moderately successful but 1987's SPANISH FLY reached the US Top 10. In 1989, their third album, STRAIGHT TO THE SKY, stalled at number 77 and produced no hit singles.
