Limbo
Emergent record label based in Bath Street, Glasgow, Scotland. Since the release of Havanna's Schtoom in August 1992 Limbo has built an enviable profile as a home to underground house. The label was inaugurated by Billy Kiltie (b. c.1973) and Davey Mackenzie through the auspices of their 23rd Precinct shop. Both had been involved in DJing and running clubs in the area over several years. Originally titled 23rd Precinct, the label was launched in early 1992 at which point dozens of demo tapes flooded in through the doors (not least due to the fact that a dance newsletter was distributed to Scotland from the premises). One was passed to Kiltie by local act Q-Tex, and their EQUATOR EP consequently became the first release. By the time of Q-Tex's second, NATURAL HIGH EP, they had national distribution through Revolver. Soon Limbo emerged, with most of the tracks released in its short history centring on funky, accessible house with distinctive breakbeats. Their success is founded, according to the label's proprietors, on the fact that every record features the involvement of DJ's: so that each is geared to ensuring a strong club reaction. Other staples in its schedule have included Gipsy (I Trance You), Mukkaa, Deep Piece (Kiltie himself with releases like Bup, Bup, Birri, Birri and Torwart, in association with Stuart Crichton) and Sublime (Sublime). They have also added the experimental Out On A Limb subsidiary for material like Space Buggy's eponymous debut (a side project from one of the Havanna team).
