Hubert Laws
b. 10 November 1939, Houston, Texas, USA. The brother of saxophonist Ronnie Laws, flautist Hubert has enjoyed successful careers in both classical and jazz contexts. In the '60s and '70s he recorded for Atlantic Records and CTI and played in the New York Jazz Sextet, while retaining a place in the New York Metropolitan Opera House and the New York Philharmonic Orchestra. Still making jazz records in the '80s, Laws also undertook a series of concerts with classical flautist Jean-Pierre Rampal. Having played with Gunther Schuller, James Moody, Clark Terry and many others, Laws’ virtuosity has done much to increase the flute's credibility in the jazz world.
