Steve Kuhn
b. 24 March 1938, New York, USA. Kuhn began playing the piano when he was five and was studying with Serge Chaloff's mother when he was 12. He first played professionally at the age of 13. He graduated from Harvard in 1959 and worked with Kenny Dorham before spending two months with John Coltrane. He joined Stan Getz in 1961 and stayed right through the bossa nova craze. After two years with trumpeter Art Farmer, he settled in Stockholm, Sweden in 1966, working with his own trio throughout Europe. Since his return to New York in 1971, he has worked extensively in the world of commercial music. He has also performed with his own quartet which includes Sheila Jordan and has become an ECM Records solo artist. Kuhn is an accomplished musician whose playing and compositions have developed from standard post-bop to include increasingly dissonant harmony and unusual time signatures and phrase lengths. Kuhn's favourites range from Fats Waller to Bill Evans.
