Roger Kellaway
b. 1 November 1939, Waban, Massachusetts, USA. Kellaway was initially attracted to jazz by the piano playing of George Shearing. He switched from piano to double bass and studied at the New England Conservatory (1957-59). He played the bass with Jimmy McPartland before returning to work full-time st the piano. In the mid-60s he played with the bands of Kai Winding, Al Cohn and Zoot Sims, and Clark Terry/ Bob Brookmeyer, as well as working in the studios with musicians as varied as Ben Webster, Wes Montgomery and Sonny Rollins. In 1966, he moved to Los Angeles and played with the Don Ellis band. Since the late '60s he has worked as musical director for Bobby Darin (1967-69) and concentrated on studio work with musicians as diverse as Joni Mitchell and Jimmy Knepper. He has written numerous film scores including THE PAPER LION (1968), A STAR IS BORN (1976) and BREATHLESS (1983), as well as writing a ballet PAMTGG (1971), commissioned by George Balanchine and PORTRAITS OF TIME (1983), commissioned by the Los Angeles Philharmonic Orchestra. In 1984, he returned to New York to studio work and a duo with Dick Hyman.
