Joachim Kuhn
b. 15 March 1944, Leipzig, Germany. Between the ages of five to his mid-teens, Kuhn took lessons in classical piano and composing, then became a professional jazz musician. He set up his own trio in 1962, which lasted until 1966, when he established a quartet with his brother, clarinettist Rolf Kuhn. When this band ended in 1969 he led his own group in Paris, until joining the Jean-Luc Ponty Experience in 1971. He left Ponty in 1972 to co-lead a group with Eje Thelin. Since then he has frequently worked solo, but has also been a member of the acclaimed Tony Oxley Quintet. While he has done work which might be categorized as ‘new age’ in the late '80s, recent concerts have shown that he can still play in tougher fashion.
