Jean Knight
b. 26 June 1943, New Orleans, Louisiana, USA. Jean Knight's early releases with producer Huey P. Meaux were overshadowed by Mr. Big Stuff, one of souls’ most popular 1971 releases. Released on Stax and produced by Wardell Quezerque at the same session which yielded the King Floyd hit Groove Me, Knight's performance was rewarded with a US number 2 pop hit and R&B number 1. The combination of irresistible rhythms of southern and New Orleans dance styles, indicated the emergence of a new found style which, despite several excellent follow-up singles, including You Think You're Hot Stuff and Carry On, the studio team were unable to develop. The singer did re-emerge during the '80s with You Got The Papers (But I Got The Man) (1981) and a version of the perennial, if suggestive, favourite, My Toot Toot (1985).
