Evelyn Knight
b. Washington, DC, USA. Knight was a popular singer in the US during the '40s. She turned professional by singing on a local radio show, followed by a spell at the King Cole Room in Washington. She was particularly effective with the perky novelty songs which were so prevalent in the '40s. Her first hit came in 1944 with Dance With A Dolly (With A Hole In Her Stocking), backed by trumpeter Tutti Camarata's Orchestra. This was followed by Sidney Lippman and Sylvia Dee's ‘nonsense’ song, Chickery Chick. After Brush Those Tears From Your Eyes (1948), she had a US number 1, and million-seller, with A Little Bird Told Me. This was followed during the next two years by Buttons And Bows, Powder Your Face With Sunshine (another number 1), It's Too Late Now, You're So Understanding, Candy And Cake and All Dressed Up To Smile. On her last hit, My Heart Cries For You, she duetted with country singer Red Foley. After the hits dried up she continued to be a popular nightclub attraction.
