Carl Kress
b. 20 October 1907, Newark, New Jersey, USA, d. 10 June 1965. An outstanding and highly-respected guitarist, Kress was active throughout the '20s and '30s, making numerous recordings. Often he worked in company with other guitarists, including Eddie Lang and Dick McDonough, with whom he recorded duets. In the '40s and '50s Kress retained his earlier unusual chordal style and preference for the acoustic instrument, despite changes generated by Charlie Christian and others. He continued to work into the '60s, frequently in partnership with George Barnes, and was performing with him in Reno, Nevada, when he collapsed and died in June 1965.
