Anton Karas
b. 7 July 1906, Vienna, Austria, d. 9 January 1985. The man who arguably did more to popularize the zither than anyone before or after, is best remembered as the sound behind the famous Third Man Theme (Harry Lime). The Carol Reed film classic, THE THIRD MAN (1949), utilized Karas's music throughout, and it was no surprise that film-goers went out and made the song and its accompanying album a number 1 hit in 1950. Although Karas was a virtuoso, he remains one of the more famous one-hit-wonders of our time.
