Jim Galloway
b. 28 July 1936, Kilwinning, Scotland. After working in Glasgow while still a teenager, Galloway, a clarinettist and saxophonist, emigrated to Canada in the mid-'60s where he became well known as a sideman, leader of the Metro Stompers, accompanist to visiting American jazz stars, and radio personality. Success at the 1976 Montreux Jazz Festival with a band that included Jay McShann and Buddy Tate led to worldwide recognition for this dedicated musician. Rooted in the mainstream, Galloway's playing of the many instruments on which he performs betrays his admiration for Sidney Bechet (soprano), Edmond Hall (clarinet) and Coleman Hawkins (tenor) among others. A major work, Hot And Suite, was given its first performance at the 1985 Edinburgh Arts Festival.
