Henry Grimes
b. 3 November 1935, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, USA. After studying at the Juilliard School of Music, Grimes played bass in bands led by or featuring musicians such as Arnett Cobb, Lee Morgan and Al Heath. In the late '50s and early '60s he was with Gerry Mulligan, Charles Mingus, Thelonious Monk (with whom he appeared at the Newport Jazz Festival), Sonny Rollins and other leading modernists, but also played with Benny Goodman. Throughout the '60s Grimes freelanced with many leading post-bebop and free jazz players including Rollins, Albert Ayler, Archie Shepp and Don Cherry. A powerful bassist, Grimes's style changed dramatically from his earlier bebop days to the marked unconventionality of his later free-form work. Around 1967 Grimes disappeared from music.
