Henry Gray
b. 19 January 1925, Kenner, Louisiana, USA. Having grown up in rural Louisiana, where he taught himself piano at an early age, Gray moved to Chicago in the '40s. He soon built a solid reputation as a band pianist in the city's blues clubs, and as accompanist on records by artists such as Junior Wells and Billy Boy Arnold. His own recordings in the early '50s featured strong, rocking blues, but they remained unissued for many years. Following a long period with the Howlin' Wolf band, he moved back to Louisiana in 1969. He has continued to work in music, including stints at Tabby Thomas's Blues Box club, and has made several fine records, most notably singles on Jay Miller's Blues Unlimited label and Sunland, and an album made during a European tour in 1977.
