Green On Red
Formed as the Serfers in Tucson, Arizona, USA in 1981, the group featured Dan Stuart (guitar/vocals), Jack Waterson (bass) and Van Christian (drums). Christian was replaced by Alex MacNicol, and Chris Cacavas added on keyboards for the first EP TWO BIBLES, released under their new group name. The band attracted attention as part of the '60s-influenced ‘paisley underground’ alongside the Rain Parade and the Dream Syndicate. However, Green On Red's sound owed more to Neil Young and country/blues traditions, an influence that became more apparent when Chuck Prophet IV joined on lead guitar in 1984. Sophisticated arrangements on 1987's THE KILLER INSIDE ME saw the group pushing for mainstream recognition, but shortly afterwards Waterson and Cacavas left to pursue solo careers. The remaining duo, Prophet and Stuart, forged ahead, using session musicians for the excellent HERE COME THE SNAKES. Both members have operated outside the confines of the group, most notably Stuart's involvement on DANNY AND DUSTY featuring Steve Wynn and members of the Long Ryders. In 1991 Green On Red re-emerged with SCAPEGOATS recorded in Nashville with the help of Al Kooperon keyboards. Prophet's solo career took off in 1993 with the well received BALINESE DANCER.
