Gaye Bykers On Acid
This UK rock group employed an image which combined traditional biker attire with elements of psychedelia and hippie camp. They were led by the colourful figure of Mary Millington, aka Mary Mary (b. Ian Garfield Hoxley; vocals), alongside Kevin Hyde (drums), Robber (b. Ian Michael Reynolds; bass) and Tony (b. Richard Anthony Horsfall; guitar). They were later complemented by disc jockey William Samuel Ronald Monroe (Rocket Ronnie). Mary Mary, who had once come second in Leicester's Alternative Miss Universe competition, was often to be seen in platform shoes and dresses, which fuelled the critics’ confusion with regard to the band's name and gender orientation. Their debut album, DRILL YOUR OWN HOLE, required purchasers to do just that, as the record was initially issued without a hole in its centre. After leaving Virgin they set up their own label, Naked Brain, quite conceivably because nobody else would have them. Subsequent to the band's demise, which may or may not prove permanent, Kevin instigated a new band, G.R.O.W.T.H., with Jeff (ex- Janitors). Tony teamed up with Brad Bradbury in Camp Collision, while Mary Mary joined ex-members of Killing Joke, Ministry and PiL in the multi-member outfit Pigface. The '90s would bring a more permanent home for his talents in the shape of Hyperhead, formed with Karl Leiker (ex- Luxuria, Bugblot).
