Dusko Goykovich
b. 14 October 1931, Jajce, Yugoslavia. After completing his formal studies at the Academy of Music in Belgrade, Goykovich played trumpet and flügelhorn in various dancebands and radio orchestras in Europe, including those of Max Greger and Kurt Edelhagen. In the late '50s he travelled to the USA, played at the Newport Jazz Festival and then pursued his studies at Berklee College Of Music. Thereafter, like many Berklee alumni, he entered the bands of Maynard Ferguson and Woody Herman. Back in Europe he played in the small group led by Sal Nistico and then joined the Clarke-Boland Big Band, where he remained for five years until 1973. In the '70s Goykovich's associates included Slide Hampton and Alvin Queen. He also worked extensively in radio and education in Europe. A fine post-bop trumpeter, Goykovich's style derives from early Miles Davis, but the inclusion of traditional melodies from his homeland in his playing makes him a distinctive soloist. In the '90s Goykovich toured European venues, both as a soloist and in tandem with Italian alto saxophonist Gianni Basso.
