Barry Goldberg
b. 1941, Chicago, Illinois, USA. Goldberg was one of several white aspirants frequenting Chicago's blues clubs during the early '60s. He befriended guitarist Michael Bloomfield prior to forming the Goldberg-Miller Blues Band with itinerant Texan Steve Miller. Goldberg assumed the group's leadership on his partner's departure, and the resultant album is a fine example of pop-influenced R&B. An accomplished keyboards player, Goldberg was part of the back-up band supporting Bob Dylan on his controversial appearance at 1965's Newport Folk Festival. Sessions supporting Mitch Ryder preceded a brief spell with Chicago Loop before Goldberg joined the Electric Flag. The artist resumed his own career in 1968 with the Barry Goldberg Reunion. Several erratic albums followed including TWO JEWS BLUES which featured contributions from Bloomfield and Duane Allmanand a collaboration with Neil Merryweather and Charlie Musselwhite, IVAR AVENUE REUNION. Goldberg also continued his session work and produced albums for Musselwhite and the Rockets, but has been unable to translate his status as a sideman into a coherent solo path.
