Barbara George
b. 16 August 1942, New Orleans, Louisiana, USA. Barbara George is best remembered for her 1961 R&B number 1 hit, I Know, released on the small AFO (All For One) label. George was discovered by Jessie Hill, another New Orleans R&B artist, himself known for the hit Ooh Poo Pah Doo. Hill brought George to AFO, where label head Harold Battiste at first did not see much potential in the girl. They recorded I Know in spite of this and it was heard by Sue Records owner Juggy Murray, who agreed to distribute the record. I Know not only reached the top of the R&B chart but was an enormous success in the US pop charts. George was unable to follow her hit with any other significant records, however, and by the end of the '60s she had retired from music, save for a brief return in the early '80s.
