Faith Over Reason
This English group emerged on the independent scene in the early '90s. Their version of Nick Drake's Northern Sky pigeon-holed the group as one firmly planted within the pastoral sound of British folk/rock era of the '70s, although conversely, the group's sound has often been compared with that of the Sundays and Smiths. Formed in Croydon, south London, the group consists of Moira Lambert (b. 13 October 1970, Chicester, West Sussex, England; lead vocals/acoustic guitar), William Lloyd (b. 17 March 1971, London, England; bass/keyboards), Simon Roots (b. 1 September 1970; guitar) and Mark Wilsher (b. 1 May 1970, Croydon, Surrey, England; drums). The release of two EPs in 1990, BELIEVING IN ME (Evangeline/Believing In Me/Northern Sky) and BILLY BLUE (High In The Sun/Ice Queen/Billy Blue/Move Closer) on the Big Cat label, drew well-earned praise from the music press. Moira in the meantime contributed vocals to Saint Etienne's Only Love Can Break Your Heart, an indie-dance hit of 1990. The group's momentum was disrupted in late 1991 by the departure of Roots.
