Barbara Fairchild
b. 12 November 1950, Knobel, Arkansas, USA. Fairchild was raised on a farm and was entertaining at every opportunity. The family moved to St. Louis when she was 12 years old and she was soon recording for the local Norman label and working on television. In 1968 she moved to Nashville to further her career and amongst her early singles is Remember The Alimony for Kapp Records. Her song, This Stranger (My Little Girl), has been recorded by Loretta Lynn, Dottie West and Liz Anderson. Fairchild was signed to Columbia in 1969 and immediately achieved her first US country hit with Love Is A Gentle Thing, followed by various minor entries including A Girl Who'll Satisfy Her Man and Love's Old Song. Then, the novelty Teddy Bear Song, written by a St Louis policeman, topped the US country charts. She never repeated that success although she had country hits with Kid Stuff, Baby Doll, You've Lost That Lovin Feelin’’, Mississippi, Cheatin Is’ and Let Me Love You Once Before You Go. She wrote Tara for one of her daughters, and her husband and songwriting partner, steel guitarist Randy Reinhard, was part of her road band. After their divorce, she married Milton Carroll, who had recorded for RCA. In the early '80s, she became a born-again Christian and left the music business for several years. In 1986 she recorded an album with production by her old friend Don Williams, but only a single was released.
