Eternal
Pop dance quartet made up of lead singer Esther Bennett, Vernie Bennett, Louise Nordling and Kelle Bryan, who met in a south London Baptist church near Croydon. Coming to the attention of manager and soul svengali Dennis Ingoldsby, they made an immediate impact on the charts with Stay and Save Our Love. However, much more strident and demanding of the listener was the third volley, Just A Step From Heaven, whose video depicted a gang of youths populating scenes of urban desolation, before switching to a female rendering a lecture of self-awareness beneath the symbol of the Black Panther movement. It was perhaps a little disappointing, then, to learn that Eternal's songs were wholly crafted and written by back-room staff.
