Episode Six
Emerging from grammar school and officially launched in July 1964, this beat sextet comprised Sheila Carter (vocals/organ), her brother Graham Dimmock (vocals/rhythm guitar), Andy Ross (lead vocals), Roger Glover (vocals/bass), Tony Lander (lead guitar) and Harvey Fields (drums). Highly regarded as a live act, they toured frequently and, following the recruitment of Ian Gillan in place of Andy Ross, they made a series of singles for Pye Records. Specializing in cover versions such as the Isley Brothers’ Put Yourself In My Place, the Tokens’ I Hear Trumpets Blow, Tim Rose's Morning Dew and the Beatles’ Here, There And Everywhere, they frequently threatened to break through but fell tantalizingly short of the charts. Their 1969 classical/pop swansong Mozart Versus The Rest was followed by the departure of Glover and Gillan, who went on to form the highly successful Deep Purple.
