Eat Static
Prime exponents of the UK's nouveau hippy trance/rave culture, allied to the Planet Dog emporium and an offshoot of Ozric Tentacles, Eat Static are essentially Merv Peopler and Joie Hinton of that band. Much of this Somerset duo's recorded material concerns their mutual obsessions with UFO's. ‘We can't take techno as seriously as some purists do so we've coated it in this sci-fi motif. And we're mad for all that anyway’. Gulf Breeze, for example, was actually written about the area near Penascola, Florida, where Ed Walters was purportedly kidnapped by aliens in 1987. That track was also remixed by Junior Vasquez after he heard the song in his hotel room. Earlier singles had also been well-received, despite frequent disparaging references to their crusty origins. For example, Lost In Time was a Melody Maker single of the week late in 1993. Their IMPLANT album continued with previous fixations. Cydonia was titled after an area on Mars where pyramids have been ‘sighted’, while Dzhopa Dream concerned an ancient Tibetan tribe allegedly descended from alien visitors.
