Tommy Duncan
b. Thomas Elmer Duncan, 11 January 1911, Hillsboro, Texas, USA, d. 25 July 1967. Duncan grew up loving the music of Jimmie Rodgersand made the start of a long musical career in 1932, when he joined Bob Wills in the Light Crust Doughboys. When Wills quit in 1933 to form his own band, Duncan went with him to become one of Wills’ original Texas Playboys. He stayed with Wills until 1948, when probably tired of fronting the band in Wills’ absences caused mainly by his drinking, he left to form his own band the Western All Stars, taking with him several Texas Playboys. During his years with Wills they co-wrote several songs and Duncan's fine baritone vocals appeared on countless recordings including the 1940 million-selling New San Antone Rose. In 1949, recording for Capitol, he registered his only solo chart hit with his version of the Jimmie Rodgers’ song Gambling Polka Dot Blues. In 1959, Wills and Duncan were reunited and in 1960-61, they recorded over 40 sides for Liberty. Although he made no further recordings with Wills, Duncan remained active until his death following an heart attack in July 1967. It is impossible to separate the careers of Duncan and Wills and most experts have maintained that in their solo work, they never achieved the greatness of their partnership.
(See album listing under Bob Wills). Solo album: FOR THE LAST TIME(recorded live at Riverside Ballroom, Phoenix, Arizona) (1984).
