The Droogs
Formed in 1972, this Los Angeles-based group initially included Rich Albin (vocals), Roger Clay (guitar/vocals), Paul Motter (bass) and Kyle Raven (drums). Unashamedly inspired by '60s garage bands, the quartet founded their own label, Plug & Socket, on which they recorded cover versions of favourite songs and originals inspired by their heroes. Having completed a mere six singles in the space of 10 years, during which time the group's rhythm section underwent several changes, the Droogs found themselves avatars of the then in-vogue Paisley Underground scene. STONE COLD WORLD was sadly obscured in the flurry to praise Green On Red, the Long Ryders and Bangles, but Albin and Clay doggedly pursued their chosen direction when the fashion faded. WANT SOMETHING, issued following a protracted absence, featured material by John Hiatt, the Kinks and Peter Holsapple (of the dB's), and continued the unit's dalliance with psychedelic guitar pop.
