Durocs
Formed in 1979, this San Francisco-based act comprised of Ron Nagle (vocals/keyboards) and Scott Mathews (guitar/drums). Both musicians brought considerable experience to the project; Nagle, who founded the pioneering Mystery Trend, composed incidental music to several horror films, notably THE EXORCIST and co-wrote Don't Touch Me There, a best-seller for the Tubes. Mathews, meanwhile, was an ex-member of several groups, including the Elvin Bishop Band and the Hoodoo Rhythm Devils. The duo's songs were recorded by Michelle Phillips and Barbra Streisand, and having built a recording studio, the Pen, completed THE DUROCS, which took its name from a breed of pig noted for its large ears and genitals. The album was a strong effort but sold poorly, and the project was abandoned when Capitol Records refused to release a second set. Undeterred, the duo continued to compose and record together, and later released a single under a new name, the Profits. Their version of I'm A Hog For You Baby continued the porcine metaphor, as did its Proud Pork Productions credit. Music notwithstanding, Nagle has since become one of the USA's leading exponents of ceramic art.
