Drop Nineteens
Boston, Massachusetts, USA quintet who briefly enjoyed cult status in the '90s on the back of a fascination with all things Bostonian, a journalistic trend inspired by the breakthrough of the Pixies and Throwing Muses. Yet the Drop Nineteens, comprising Greg Ackell (guitar/vocals), Steve Zimmerman (bass/guitar), Megan Gilbert (guitar/vocals), Justin Crosby (guitar) and Pete Kosplin (drums), had an abundance of appeal in their own right. Their 1992 album debut drew its appeal from the pop savvy of Winona, a dedication to film star Winona Ryder also released as a single, the anthemic Kick The Tragedy and a cheeky cover version of Madonna's Angel, which took them into Sonic Youth styled pastiche. The record's cover featured an angelic looking young girl wielding a gun—a picture analogous to the mood swings housed therein. They pressed on with NATIONAL COMA the following year, a more concise set highlighted by songs such as All Swimmers Are Brothers and Moses Brown. However, their brief flirtation with the press was all but over, and the Drop Nineteens became another band whose talents never found the substantial audience they deserved.
