Danzig
This Satanic rock ‘n’ roll quartet was put together by ex- Misfits vocalist Glenn Danzig in 1987. Enlisting the services of guitarist John Christ, bassist Eerie Von and drummer Chuck Biscuits (ex- D.O.A.), they negotiated a contract with Rick Rubin's Def American label the following year. Their self-titled debut was characterized by their leader's howling vocal tirade and a spartan, but atmospheric, backbeat. Somehow, they had successfully fused '50s rock ‘n’ roll with contemporary influences such as Venom and Metallica. DANZIG II—LUCIFUGE, which emerged in 1990, represented a significent leap forward in their songwriting. It incorporated a greater variety of styles and tempos, yet had the band's strangely compelling persona indelibly stamped on every track. Danzig ignore passing trends and fashions; instead, they remain loyal to their own ideals and beliefs, with a level of integrity foreign to many so called ‘black metal’ bands.
